You Can Join the District Superintendent in Thailand

Our RM District Mission Team is again planning a trip to Thailand in the month of November, 2007, for the purpose of chartering the First United Methodist Church of Thailand, God's Purpose Church.  We will again be working with the God Purpose Church in Chon Buri.  LastNovember we had a marvelous teach-in.  You may see pictrues and the story by clicking on the appropriate logo on the main page.

The trip will cost approximately $1,800.  If you are interested in joining with the team, contact the district office at rmdistumc@suddenlink.net.

Dr. Simpson traveled to Southeast Asia the last of August in 2005 with a team from the General Board of Global Ministries, including Dr. David Wu, The Rev. Jong Sung Kim, Dr. Ann Cheng and Dr. Sam Dixon from the General Board. In the summer, he was in China and Tibet after attending the World Methodist Conference in Seoul.

The Rocky Mount District ministers and the Connectional Table endorsed a relationship with a growing United Methodist in Southeast Asia.  Dr. Simpson will preach twice.  One congregation of some six hundred members near Bangkok wishes to explore being a part of the United Methodist connection.

Dr. Simpson preached one Sunday at a small UMC overlooking a rice paddy in Cambodia.   One day was spent with Clara Biswas, UMC missionary known as "the dump lady, " because of her work educating children who rummage through the land fill looking for food or anything of value.

Another day was spent with Dr. Jim Gulley, a Virginia minister with a Ph.D. in agriculture, who supervises a project that take pig waste and converts it into cooking gas (methane).  This work is done through a grant arranged by Methodists in Finland.

While there, Dr. Simpson was part of the Second Annual Meeting of the Cambodia Methodist Mission, sponsored by four denominations:  the United Methodist Church, the Chinese Methodist Fellowship, the Korean Methodist Church, and the Singapore Methodist Church.  Two UMC bishops (William Dew of California and Patrick Streiff of Switzerland) joined bishops of the other churches to ordain the first elders to be ordained in that nation, two men- and a woman-pastor.

The last Sunday, Dr. Simpson preached at a growing, independent congregation in a developed area of Thailand known as Chon Buri.  Following a two hour song service, Dr. Simpson preached for over an hour.  When he gave an invitation, many came forward.  Six made first professions of faith in Christ.

Discussions with the church centered on the meaning of Methodism.  The brother of Ann Cheng, a member of the Board of Directors of the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, who is a medical doctor in Thailand, along with his wife, also a physician, have been instrumental in the founding of God's Purpose Church. She serves as worship leader for this growing congregation.
